Interview: Kaya’s thoughts on Vampire Requiem and more… 日本語あり

Before setting out on his European tour, Kaya was gracious enough to give ROKKYUU his thoughts on the new single, the upcoming tour, and what prompted his return to his gothic roots.

69: Introduce yourself and tell us something that would surprise your fans.
(まずは自己紹介、とファン達をびっくりさせてしまう事実があれば教えてください。)
Kaya: Nice to meet you! I’m visual kei singer Kaya. Something that surprises people? I have over 100 lovers. [laugh]
(初めまして。Kayaです。ビジュアル系歌手です。びっくりさせてしまう事実！？恋人が100人以上います！！笑)

69: The look and sound of the new single is very gothic and you’ve said you want to have a gothic year. What prompted that?
(新しいシングル「VampireRequiem」は凄くゴシックな曲ですね。前ライブで今年は「ゴシックな一年」をしたいと言いました。きっかけは何でしょうか？)
Kaya: In the five years since I’ve gone solo, I’ve challenged my make various kinds of music, a kaleidoscope theme. I’ve done a lot of bright songs, like “Chocolat,” but at times when people tell me what they see me as, a lot of people have the opinion that I’m a “gothic person” or “gothic lolita.”  Maybe it’s because I used to be in Schawrz Stein and that’s influenced peoples’ perception, but since I’ve gone solo I’ve done more upbeat songs so I was surprised. But I thought, if I’ve got this hard-won gothic image, I should try to express that image thoroughly, that was what started this. I like gothic things all along, music and movies, and I’m excited about what’s to come.
(ソロになってから５年間、「万華鏡」をテーマに様々な音楽に挑戦してきました。曲的には「ショコラ」のような明るいものが多かったのですが、ある時、みんなに私のイメージを聞いた時に「ゴシックな人」「ゴシックロリータの人」という意見が多かったのです。多分以前私が組んでいたSchwarz Steinの影響が大きいと思うのですが、ソロになってから明るい曲が多かったので、驚いてしまって。でも折角ゴシックなイメージがあるのなら、しっかりそのイメージを表現してみようかなと思ったのがきかっけです。もともとゴシックな雰囲気なものが好きなので（音楽でも映画でも）、今からワクワクしています。)

69: What does “gothic” mean to you?
(自分にとって「ゴシック」は何ですか？)
Kaya: The beauty of things that are obscured. The beauty of darkness. As beautiful flowers can blossom from mud, I think dark sounds are especially beautiful. I think a viewpoint that strongly expresses that is gothic.
(翳りのある美しさ。闇の美です。美しい花が泥から咲くように、暗闇にこそ本当の美しさがあると私は思うので、それを色濃く表現した世界観こそが「ゴシック」だと思います。)

69: The character expressed in the song is a vampire. You often seem to take on different characters when you sing and you really express that in your voice- how do you get into the feeling of the character?　Is it difficult?
(「Vampire Requiem」 はヴァンパイアの立場で歌っていますね。曲で色々な役を演じることがよくありますが、声にキャラクターの感情がよく現れています。役に入るのは難しいですか、そのときどんな準備をしますか？)
Kaya: It’s not difficult. The role begins with making the song lyrics as well as the compsotion and through those steps I think about the image. Because I think very deeply and in detail about things like “what era is this person from?”, “what’s their personality?”, “what do they like?”, “what kind of person are they?”, I can soon enter the role. Really, I can’t say they’re separate people, I feel that because I’m often expressing the face of this person inside me, I’m expressing my own whole self.
(難しいことではございません。作詞および作品のイメージを考える段階から役作りが始まります。いつの時代で、どんな性格で、何が好きで、どういう人だったのかということを細かく細かく考えていくので、徐々にその役に入っていけます。また、まったく別の人間というわけではなく、私の中にある一面を出すことが多いので、自分の一面を出している、という感じですね。)

69: How was collaborating with HIZAKI?
(HIZAKIさんとコラボレーションするのはどうでしたか？)
Kaya: It was so fun! He’s got such an exquisite sense of beauty and we get along really well, so by discussing various things we were able to create [Vampire Requiem]. It was an extremely significant recording.
(非常に楽しかったです！！とても美に対する意識が高い人ですし、仲も良いので、色々相談しながら作業が出来ました。とても有意義なレコーディングでした。)

69: As you most often perform as a solo artist, how does it feel when you perform with instrumentalists?
(Kayaさんはよくソロでパフォーマンスをしますが、楽器演奏者と一緒にステージに立つのはどんな感じですか？)
Kaya: It’s fun. I’m always solo, so when I sometimes have other members around it’s really inspiring.
(楽しいですねぇ。いつも一人なので、たまにメンバーさんがいると、刺激になります。)

69: A lot of your image seems to be inspired by other cultures and time periods, for example, the Marie Antoinette costume in Transmigration. If you could be reborn, when, where, and as what would you like to be?
(Kayaさんのイメージ（キャラクターのほうがわかりやすいかも？）は色々な時代、国から影響がされているようですが、(たとえばトランスマイグレーションのマリーアントワネットなど)。もし生まれ変わればいつ、どこにうまれ変わりたいとおもいます？)
Kaya: I’d like to go to 18^th century France! I want to master the Rococo style in its gorgeous and luxurious birthplace. Then I think I’d like to see the Edo period of Japan, the Tokugawa Shogunate. I’d want to experience firsthand the establishment of that unique and wonderful culture.
(一度１８世紀のフランスには行ってみたいですね！豪華絢爛な本場のロココを堪能したいです。あとは日本の江戸時代、徳川幕府の頃にも行ってみたいです。独特の文化を築き上げた素晴らしい時代だったので体験してみたいです。)

69:  You’ve been around the visual scene for quite a while- what changes have you noticed over the last ten years?
(Kayaさんはヴィジュアル歴が長いですが、初期から今までのヴィジュアル界で変わったと思う事はありますか？)
Kaya: In the early days a lot of people were particular in visual kei, and there were a lot of artists who were quite unique. Recently the quality has gone up and everyone is lovely, but I think a lot of the individuality has been lost. Also, recently everyone is sound and healthy, and there are a lot of bands with a really positive image. Before there were darker, more decadent acts. [laughs]
(初期のビジュアル系はみんなこだわりがあって、独特のセンスの方が多かったですね。最近のビジュアル系はクオリティも高くなったし、みんな綺麗だけれど、個性がちょっと薄れてしまった気がしますね。あとは最近のビジュアル系はみんな健全、健康、ポジティブなメッセージのバンドが多くなりましたね。昔はもっとダークで、デカダンスなバンドが多かった気がします。笑)

69: You’re about to start a European tour. What are you looking forward to?
(そろそろヨーロッパツアーが始まりますね。何を楽しみしていますか？)
Kaya: The shows of course! I want to meet everyone soon. On the other hand, the schedule is going to be pretty tight, so I don’t think I’ll have time to do anything but the shows…
(やっぱりライブですね！早くみんなに会いたいです。逆に、とてもハードなスケジュールなので、ライブ以外は何も出来ないと思います…)

69: It’s not your first time abroad- have you had any interesting experiences or culture shock in the past?
(Kayaさんは初海外じゃないですね。海外にいるとき面白い経験やカルチャーショックがありましたか？)
Kaya: Japanese fashion is over-the-top, so unfortunately I stand out a lot [laughs]. Also, whatever country I go to, the shop staff and the airport and station staff are scary! In Japan they’re basically always smiling and helpful, so to see such unresponsive staff really surprised me. But on the other hand, when I talk to foreign friends in Japan they say “Japanese staff smile too much, it’s really weird!” I guess it’s just like that [culture difference] [laughs]
(やはり日本のファッションは派手みたいで、目立ってしまうことが多いです。笑 あとはどこの国に行っても、店員さんや空港の人や駅員さんなど「お店の人」が怖い！笑 日本はニコニコ笑顔で接客が基本だから、無愛想な人にはいつもびっくりしちゃう。でも日本人じゃないお友達に聞いたら、「日本の店員はみんなニコニコしすぎて変な感じ」って言われちゃったわ！？そんなもんかしら？？笑)

69: What differences do you feel between performing abroad and in Japan?
(海外ライブは、日本のライブに比べたら、雰囲気は違いますか？)
Kaya: That’s true, of course it’s different. Depending on the country there is maybe a different level of excitement. But the biggest parts are the same, everyone raises their voices and I’m very happy. We dance together. Japanese Addicts (Addict is what my fans are called) are the same. Addicts’ enthusiasm is shared world-wide! [laugh]
(そうですね、やはり違いますね。国に寄ってノリは違うかも。でも大きくは同じで、みんなたくさん声を届けてくれるから嬉しいわ。一緒に踊ってくれたり。それは日本のAddict（＝Kayaのファンの名称）も同じ。Addictのノリは世界共通なのかも！笑)

69: A lot of people will be seeing you for the first time on this tour, what impression would you like to leave as a performer?
(始めて聞くの方がたくさんいるはずので、パフォーマーとしてお客さんにどんな印象を残したいと思いますか？)
Kaya: It’s the same when I perform in Japan, but I want give the listener the opportunity to examine their values. It’s fine if I don’t change a person’s outlook on life or anything big like that, it’s just important to give them the chance. Regardless of the genre, I think I just want to give that chance to the hearts of my audience.
(日本での活動もそうなのですが、私はリスナーの価値観に「きっかけ」を与えたい。その人の人生観が変わる大きな事じゃなくてもいいの。この「きっかけ作り」が大切。見てくれた人の心に、ジャンルは何でもいいから何か「きっかけ」を与えたいと思います。)

69: What would you recommend first time listeners listen to?
(初めて聞く人におすすめの曲はなんでしょうか？)
Kaya: The new single “Vampire Requiem”! It’s loaded with my charm. [laugh]. And of course “Chocolat.”  Cuteness and darkness, poison and sensuality, man and woman, total contradictions together-maybe that’s my particular weapon.
(ニューシングルの「VampireRequiem」！Kayaの魅力が満載です！笑 あとはやっぱり「ショコラ」かなぁ。可愛らしさとダークさ、毒気と色気、男と女、“真逆のもの”を併せ持つのがKayaの武器なのかも。)

69: Last year you did a modeling collaboration with Alice and the Pirates- do you have any current modeling or fashion plans?
(去年 Alice and the Pirates のモデルコラボレーションしましたね。またモデルしたいと思いますか？予定はありますか？)
Kaya: Definitely! I don’t have any set plans, but if an opportunity arises I want to try to do it again!
(はい！是非！！予定はないかれど、お話があれば是非またやってみたいです。)

69: What inspires your personal style?
(ファッション、スタイルについて、どこからインスピレーションを受けていますか？)
Kaya: Everything I see, everything I hear. I think the biggest influences are old Japanese girl’s comics, like Moto Hagio’s works, and maybe Kabuki.
(目に映る、すべてのもの、耳に入るすべてのものから。大きい影響は日本の昔の少女漫画（萩尾望都さんの作品）や、あとは歌舞伎かな。)

69: Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions?
(「新年の抱負」はありますか？)
Kaya: I’m going to pursue a gothic year! I’d also like to perform more overseas lives than last year~
(「ゴシック」を追求する年にします！ あとは海外公演を去年よりたくさんしたいなぁ～。)

Kaya: Thank you for always supporting me! I just released Vampire Requiem and started a tour. 2012 is my gothic year, so please look forward to it! Most of all I’d like you to come to my shows.
