V-Rock Fest 2009: Things You Just Had to See

Live Report

by Leela McMullen, Heather Ford, Pei-Hsuan Kan, posted November 23, 2009

While we could’ve strung together a long, winding play-by-play of all of the major sets at V-Rock Fest 2009, we thought it would be more fun to report on some of the funniest and most memorable moments from the two-day festival. From Merry’s self-flagellation with a microphone, to hundreds of glimmering sensu waving like a school of fish during Kagrra,’s performance, to a backstage sound check that sent fangirls stampeding, we present moments from V-Rock Fest that you just had to see.

They Nearly Kill Themselves

Doremidan: After a fun set during which vocalist Makoto kept the audience pumped, some final antics ensured his performance’s posterity. Intending to cap the performance with a final jump, Makoto stacked the landing, stumbled, and almost fell over. Just as the crowd was recovering from the momentary shock, drummer Reika gave them another jolt as he seemed to tumble off the edge of the stage in over-excitement. Luckily, neither member was injured, and rosy-cheeked Reika clambered back onstage with the help of flustered fans. —Leela

AND: It was one of those moments you just had to catch when vocalist Ikuma attempted to skip down the green stage’s catwalk only to have his mic cord catch on some equipment, nearly giving him whiplash! —Pei

Leela McMullen is a strong believer in the philosophy "no music, no life." Having traversed the range of Japanese fandoms, she found her home at last in visual kei and has made it her mission to share what she loves most with the world. Leela completed her B.A. in Japanese language from Griffith University in Gold Coast Australia. She now lives and works in Japan, striving to bring you the goods, hot from the scene. Follow her on twitter for juicy hints of upcoming articles if you've got a bit of Japanese language under your belt! http://twitter.com/#!/LeelaInTokyo

Heather Ford, opinionated but friendly, studied linguistics for the love of talking to people and enjoys nothing more than a long chat over a glass of wine. For Heather, there's never a moment without music or a day without dancing. She can't get enough of summer festivals and the great outdoors, but needs more hours in the day for internet gossip in bed. Heather writes to entertain and tells it how it is. She loves Japan for the lights in the big cities, the fireflies in the country, the rock concerts and rock gardens, the insane fashion and beautiful traditions, and for all the unforgettable memories.

Pei-Hsuan Kan's first visual kei live experience was in December 2008. She graduated from Griffith University with a Bachelors in Japanese language, and is now living and working in Japan. She's always up for checking out a live and letting herself be carried away with the music. With an open mind and mostly optimistic personality, Pei takes things as they come.
