hide Birthday Party 2011 Celebrating a Subculture Legend
Entering with cries of “Happy birthday!” during their entrance music,” MADBEAVERS broke out their carefree rock with “MORNING GLORY” and the crowd clapped along. All throughout the number, lead vocalist and guitarist Kiyoshi threw in birthday greetings both spoken and sung whenever he had breath to spare. The song to follow was hide’s “Beauty & Stupid,” the cover full of livelyguitar and a mix of solos including a spot of moody jazz guitar.
After the classic rock of “HISTERIA,” Kiyoshi took it upon himself for no apparent reason to inform the crowd that JOE wasn’t wearing any underwear. He then introduced a new song, “DEVILS,” giving the crowd permission to sit down if they wanted to as long as they listened. Powerfully rhythmic and with some hard-rock grit, “DEVILS” showed off not only Kiyoshi’s guitar technique but his vocal skill as well.
A strong guitar riff began “BENNY” and then after a short emcee–“I think we’d like to end the year with this new song”–the love song “ANGELA” wound down the set. Kiyoshi and EBI faced off with a high-speed guitar riff and a final jump set to JOE’s drums before all three took off.
