The Sun Might Be Useless, But DEATHGAZE Aren’t!

Review

The latest single from DEATHGAZE–USELESS SUN–takes the “single” concept very literally, being just one song. As recession friendly as the price of this one song may be (a mere 500 yen), the release is a brave move. Without B-sides to provide support or fallbacks, the main event needs to be a strong, memorable piece to withstand the nitpicking that added focus may bring.

Well, DEATHGAZE have done it: While not as aggressive as their past endeavors (the brutal “-1″ springs to mind), the single is a perfect showcase of the DEATHGAZE style today. “USELESS SUN” begins arrestingly, with a volley of dual-peddled drums and Ai’s harsh growl grabbing attention. These opening moments are made for headbanging. The aggression sits back through the melodic verses and chorus, but the pace never slips enough for the live crowd to lose the impulse to move. This is a great piece to introduce DEATHGAZE to newbies.

As a “single,” however, USELESS SUN is a tease. One short song, then nothing. We hope this means they are planning an album release soon, in which case USELESS SUN is the perfect appetiser.
